Spend five minutes on LinkedIn and you'll see no shortage of marketing advice. Post more often. Invest in SEO. Run Google Ads. Launch a podcast. Refresh your website. Create more video content. Embrace AI.
None of it is bad advice. But here's the problem.
After more than 25 years in marketing, I've noticed something that surprises many business owners. The businesses that struggle with marketing are rarely under-investing in tactics. They're under-investing in strategy.
It's an all-too-common pattern. Sales slow down, so the marketing team is asked to "generate more leads."
A competitor launches a new website, so the business decides it needs one too. An agency recommends SEO, paid advertising or social media, so budget is shifted to the latest initiative.
Every decision feels logical in isolation. Collectively, however, they create a marketing function that reacts rather than leads.
Before long, the business has invested thousands of dollars in marketing activity without ever asking the most important question: What are we actually trying to achieve over the next one to three years?
When marketing lacks strategic leadership, the symptoms are remarkably consistent.
The website says one thing. The sales team says another.
The agency is optimising campaigns. The internal marketing team is busy creating content.
The leadership team is focused on revenue. Everyone is working hard.
Yet nobody is working towards the same commercial outcome.
That's when business owners begin asking: "Why isn't our marketing working?"
My response is usually the same.
You don't have a marketing problem. You have a marketing leadership problem.
Many businesses mistake activity for progress. More campaigns. More content. More emails. More social media. More advertising. Activity creates the feeling that marketing is happening.
But strategy ensures it's happening for the right reasons. Without strategy, every new campaign simply amplifies whatever already exists.
If your positioning is unclear, you'll amplify confusion. If your messaging is inconsistent, you'll amplify inconsistency.
If your value proposition isn't compelling, you'll spend more money telling more people something they still don't value.
Marketing can never compensate for a weak strategic foundation.
The businesses that consistently outperform their competitors don't necessarily spend the most on marketing.
They make better decisions.
Before launching campaigns, they answer questions such as:
Notice something? None of those questions are about Facebook Ads or Google rankings.
They're business questions. Marketing simply becomes the vehicle that helps achieve them.
Increasingly, businesses don't need another supplier. They don't need another agency. They don't need another freelancer producing more content. They need someone who can step back, connect the dots and provide strategic direction.
Someone who can align the business, marketing, sales and customer experience around a common commercial objective. That's the role of a Fractional Chief Marketing Officer.
Not to replace agencies or internal teams but to give them direction. Because great execution without strategy is simply executing the wrong plan exceptionally well
One of the biggest shifts I encourage business owners to make is changing the question they ask.
Instead of asking: "What marketing should we do next?"
Ask: What business outcome are we trying to achieve?"
The answer changes everything. Campaigns become more purposeful. Budgets become more effective. Teams become more aligned.
Marketing stops being viewed as a cost centre and starts becoming a driver of business performance. That's what strategic marketing leadership delivers.
Not more marketing. Better business decisions.
And when those decisions are guided by a clear strategy, marketing finally starts doing what it was always meant to do: Help the business grow.
